School Essays of Berlin Kids about the year 1945
Ulli Lust

Six months after the end of the Second World War, Berlin teachers asked their pupils to write about their last year. Ulli Lust came across these remarkable school essays by Berlin children in the collection "Ich schlug meiner Mutter die brennenden Funken ab" (Kontextverlag Berlin, 1996). "In my own childhood I liked to listen to the war stories of elderly relatives (they didn’t like to talk about it, but I was persistent). What made the school essays so interesting was that for the children writing them, war was a daily routine.

This comic was published in the anthology "Warburger" (Stripburger/Lubljana, 2003) and in "The Mammoth Book of Best War Comics" edited by David Kendall (Carroll & Graf/New York, Constable & Robinson/UK, 2007)

The Battalion of the Virgin Mary
Ulli Lust

Children in a war, we would most likely see them as victims only. In many wars of today, they are - none the least thanks to modern weapons - made to be effective culprits.
From 1986 to 2005, the Ugandian rebel movement LRA kidnapped 30.000 children, to turn them into soldiers. Their "methods of education" are described in this comic (after reports by escaped child soldiers).
